Properties

Cranberry is known for its astringent, antiseptic, disinfectant and acidifying action on the urinary tract. It is used for the treatment and prevention of urinary tract diseases, especially cystitis. Cranberry actually has a particularly effective antibacterial action against escherichia coli: it inhibits the adhesion of bacteria to the bladder epithelial cells, limiting its expansion. The leaves also contain a certain amount of neomirtillin, glycoside of gallic acid, which contains hypoglycaemic properties, for which they are used, in formulations, as an adjuvant in moderate forms of diabetes (senile diabetes). The edible fruit if dried possesses astringent properties: for this reason it is sometimes used in the treatment of enteritis. Due to its disinfectant action on a urinary and intestinal level it is indicated, apart from in the treatment of cystitis, even in colibacillosis. Thanks to the estrogen action employed, its use in menopausal woman can reactivate the functionality of hyalinosis ovaries. It is also indicated in disorders resulting from estrogen deficiency, such as vaginal and skin trophic disorders, mood swings, hot flushes, osteoporosis. In the latter case there is a significant tropism improvement on an intestinal mucosa level which allows for, among other things, an increased absorption of calcium.
