Equisetum

Used in ancient times for its diuretic and haemostatic powers, only at the beginning of our century was it valued and taken into account, both from a clinical and medical point of view, thus confirming its triple diuretic-haemostatic-mineralising action. The plant's roots absorb alkali salts of silicon acid from the soil which gives rise to the formation of two types of silicon, soluble and insoluble. Silicon is present throughout our body, but especially in aortic tissue and tendons, so for example, the decrease linked to the ageing processes of elastic fibres in the aortic tissue means equisetum is used as a preventive in treatment of atherosclerosis. With regards to its diuretic activity, diuresis caused by the drug is purely water, without alteration of the electrolyte content. The plant is recommended in post-traumatic and static edemas and forced diuresis in case of bacterial and inflammatory diseases of the excretory urinary tract and against kidney gravel. It can be used as an aid in weight loss therapy. Horsetail has a protective action on the mucous membranes causing a protective action and favouring healing.
