Properties

Preparations using boldo are traditionally used as a choleretic and cholagogue and to facilitate renal and digestive elimination functions. Boldo is actually included in the Official Pharmacopoeia for its hepato-protective, diuretic, stomachic, choleretic and cholagogues properties. That's why boldo is used in therapies for dyspeptic disorders and co bined with cholagogue plants such as artichoke, or plants such as senna, cascara etc., in the treatment of constipation. Boldo has also been attributed with diuretic properties, as a sedative for the nervous system and is mildly hypnotic. Boldin, the active ingredient, exerts an action on biliary secretion, and particularly on the fluidisation of the bile, which is accompanied with an antispasmodic action.

Nutraceuticals

  • 1-3% essential oil: monoterpenic compounds (limonene, (β-pinene, p-cymene, ascaridiolo, 1.8 cineole ...)
  • Flavonoids (ramnetina, isorhamnetin, chemferolo ...)
  • 0.2-0.5% alkaloids aporphine: boldin mainly (1-3%; the bark is richer 2-4% and is used for the extraction of boldin)
  • Boldoglucina (glucoside)
